Click every one of Europe’s 44 countries on an interactive map. The west goes fast: big, familiar shapes you’ve absorbed from a lifetime of weather maps and news graphics. Then the quiz reaches the Balkans and asks you to tell Slovenia from Slovakia in space instead of on paper, and things get honest.
Europe’s three difficulty zones
Zone one is freebie country: France, Spain, Germany, Italy, the UK, Scandinavia. Distinctive shapes, huge exposure. If your ancestors watched any Eurovision at all, this zone is genetic memory.
Zone two is the eastern belt, the stack of countries between the Baltic and Black Seas. Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania in strict north-to-south order (alphabetical order, helpfully, is also the geographic order). Then Belarus, Ukraine, Moldova, and the Visegrád countries. Most players know all these names and place about half correctly, which is the definition of a zone worth drilling.
Zone three is the Balkans, the region that ends perfect runs. Seven-ish countries in the space of one France, several of them born from the same breakup, with borders that follow mountains rather than convenience. Slovenia touches the Alps; Slovakia doesn’t touch the sea at all. North Macedonia is above Greece, Albania is on the coast, and Bosnia and Herzegovina wedges between Croatia’s claws. Say those sentences aloud twice and you’ve done more Balkan geography than most people ever do.
Sprinkled through everything are the microstates: Andorra, Monaco, Liechtenstein, San Marino, Malta, and Vatican City, the smallest country on Earth. The map zooms so they’re clickable, and knowing which crevice each one hides in is a genuine flex.
After the map
The efficient follow-up is pairing: run the Europe capitals quiz while the locations are fresh, then the Europe flag quiz, and Europe is fully banked. For a bigger canvas, your new Balkan confidence transfers directly to the world map quiz.

Frequently asked questions

What’s the hardest country to place in Europe?
By miss rate, the Balkan cluster collectively, with Slovenia versus Slovakia as the single most-swapped pair. The names are the problem as much as the map. Anchor Slovenia to the Alps and Italy, Slovakia to Poland and Hungary, and the swap stops happening.
Are microstates really in the quiz?
All of them, including Vatican City, which is smaller than many airports. Zoom assist keeps them clickable. Learning their hiding spots is quick and pays off forever: Andorra in the Pyrenees, Monaco on the French Riviera, San Marino inside Italy, Liechtenstein between Switzerland and Austria.
Is this a good first map quiz?
A good second one. Europe’s zone-one countries give you early momentum, and the Balkans provide a real challenge, but the South America map quiz is the kinder on-ramp with 12 countries and no lookalike clusters. Start there, come here next.
