The flags that trip everyone up

Chad and Romania headline the quiz for a reason. Both fly blue, yellow, and red vertical stripes; the difference is that Chad’s blue is a darker indigo. That’s it. That’s the entire difference, and this quiz will ask you about both.

Indonesia and Monaco are both red over white, told apart mainly by proportions: Indonesia’s flag is longer relative to its height. Poland lurks nearby with the same two colors flipped, white over red, waiting for anyone who answers on color alone.

Then come the family reunions. Colombia, Ecuador, and Venezuela all wear the yellow-blue-red of Gran Colombia, the country they briefly were, told apart by stripe widths and crests. West Africa fields a lineup of green-yellow-red flags descended from Ethiopia’s. What’s the single most confused flag pair?

Chad and Romania, and it isn’t close. The two tricolors are so similar that the countries have raised the matter diplomatically over the years, and neither has changed its design. When both appear as options for the same flag, check the blue: darker means Chad.

Why do so many flags look alike?

Shared history, mostly. Colombia, Ecuador, and Venezuela inherited one flag from Gran Colombia. Much of Africa borrowed Ethiopia’s colors as an anti-colonial statement. Slavic nations rallied around shared colors in the 1800s. Lookalike flags are usually cousins, not coincidences, which makes them memorable once you know the story.
